A letter from the owner

My former partner, Bennett Murphy, and I worked in uptown New Orleans at a college bar called Shanahan's from 1977 to 1979. At the end of 1979 we opened Murphy's at the North Gates of LSU. Two years later we bought a bar called Faps, remodeled it, and named it Fred's.

To segment the market, we made Fred's 20 years of age to enter while all other bars were 18. This helped to develop the “older crowd” we are now known for. For the most part, juniors and seniors, graduate and law students, as well as young professionals have made up the Fred's clientele.

Freds is both proud and humbled by the fact that we have been in business over 28 years, having become a Baton Rouge institution and an LSU tradition.

From 1983 to 1994 Fred's “Sunset Club” served freshly squeezed juice drinks for $1 on Thursday afternoons. The event quickly became one of our mainstays. More recently $1.50 shots after midnight , the infamous “Fred's Bomb”, Thursday's Ladies Night and Friday's Open Bar have become bar favorites. Striving to keep things fresh, fun, and exciting, Fred's has many annual events including: Crawfish Boils, The Anniversary Party, Fred's Golf Tournament, Mardi Gras Blowout, Christmas in August, Spring, Summer, and Fall Invitational, as well as Graduation parties. We also provide an array of quality live entertainment on our patio overlooking the LSU Golf Course. Our business is built on quick and friendly service. With our large 14oz. glasses, 3 fully stocked bars inside and one outside, you never have to wait long for service. Plus, our bartenders have proven to be the fastest in town.

I've often been asked why Fred's has been successful while others have failed. My answer is that I have been blessed with great and loyal employees. Working at Fred's is truly a great experience, where people bond as a family with friendships that will last a lifetime. Over the years I have employed over 500 people who all have become successful in their own lives, and now always look back with fondness at their time at Fred's.

We try to extend this bond to you, our customer. We have a friendly, easygoing atmosphere and always want everyone to feel at home. Our customers are just as much a part of Fred's as our employees, myself, and even the Moose. Whether you come out by yourself or with a group, we know you will enjoy your evening. Fred's hopes you are filled with happy memories and we want you to have a safe and wonderful time while partying with us.
